The way “they brought” Christophine to Jamaica seems like they kidnapped her especially because she was “quite young.” The fact that Antoinette’s mother does not seem to care what age Christophine is might be a way for her to compensate for her own loss of identity by marginalizing Christophine’s. Slaves could be given as gifts and because Antoinette’s mom is from Martinique, her dad gets a slave specifically from there. This passage is illuminating because it shows the power that the English had in the colonies when it comes to slavery. It is also important to the context of the novel because it goes along with the geographic isolation and accompanying loss of identity that we see throughout the novel. This quote is important to the context of the scene where we learn that Christophine, like Antoinette and her mother, is not accepted by the Jamaican people because it tells us one of the reasons why-because she is from Martinique.

I don’t know how old she was when they brought her to Jamaica, quite young. Antoinette’s mother explains to her that Christophine was “your father’s wedding present to me…He thought I would be pleased with a Martinique girl.

Christophine is an example of someone who was displaced as a product of colonialism. Also, these displaced people find themselves in an unfamiliar environment where they are seen as outcasts by the native people.

When people leave their home country, they lose their sense of belonging, because they are no longer around others like themselves. The people from England voluntarily displaced themselves from their homeland in order to make money, but also displaced slaves against their will. This loss of identity is related to postcolonialism in that people were displaced from their homelands for profit. In Wide Sargasso Sea, we see a lack of identity of several characters in the novel.
